Active Bystander

An active bystander is someone who has the moral courage to find a way to safely intervene to stop a potentially dangerous situation. You have the power to send messages about what is acceptable and expected behavior for you and your friends.

  1. Believe the victim.
  2. Tell the victim it is not their fault.
  3. Remind the victim they are not alone.
  4. Know available resources and refer the victim for help.
  5. Avoid judgment.

Sexual Assault

A sexual assault is any type of forced or coerced sexual contact or behavior that happens without consent. An Acute Sexual Assault case occurs within 120 hours of the assault and is the period of time in which DNA evidence can be collected through a forensic exam.

The 3 D’s

Stop a sexual assault before it happens!

Direct:

Be that person. Step in and interrupt a harmful situation by pointing out the problem:

  1. Just ask, “Are you okay?”
  2. Just say, “Can I talk to you for a second?”
  3. Point out inappropriate behavior.

Delegate:

If you can’t do it alone, appoint someone else:

  1. Get your friends together — it’s time to go.
  2. Alert a bartender or party host that someone has had too much to drink.
  3. If intervening in the situation would be too dangerous, call 911 on your cell phone — it’s always an option to stop the situation from escalating.

Distract:

Interrupt a risky situation by diverting attention:

  1. Make up an excuse to get a friend away from someone.
  2. “I’m about to get sick, let’s go home.”
  3. Draw attention to yourself (ex: spill your drink).
